MMA wants aid and rehabilitation monitored: Baloch
Staff Report
GUJRAT: Liaqat Baloch, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) Punjab president, has demanded the government make a system to monitor rehabilitation work in the quake-hit areas and present the magnitude of foreign aid in parliament.
Mr Baloch, who also heads Al-Khidmat Foundation Pakistan, told a public gathering on Tuesday that the United States and Europe were least concerned about the catastrophe in Pakistan, adding that organisations like Al Qaeda were gaining strength by earning sympathies of the quake-hit families.
“Pakistan despite being a frontline state in the war against terrorism has been at a loss as the US had not offered the help which was expected from it,” Mr Baloch said.
He said that the arrival of rescue team of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) reflected the government’s lack of confidence in its own army, adding that the Pakistan Army could have carried out the relief work which was done by the NATO team.
“There should have been better coordination at the national level to tackle the catastrophe which had affected at least 250,000 families,” the MMA official said.
Mr Baloch said that President Pervez Musharraf had not taken parliament into confidence on the decision to delay the purchase of F-16 aircraft from the US.
Meanwhile, Sahibzada Saeed Shah, MMA Gujrat district president, presented a cheque of Rs 2 million for quake victims to Mr Baloch.
